A few years ago, my friend, Jamie and I were preparing for a Women’s Retreat and if you’ve ever put on a big event or even small one, there’s lots that go into it. Lots of planning and preparing and sometimes it can be overwhelming. We adopted the phrase “we get to“, we get to do this, we get to serve the Lord, we get to minister to these ladies. When we look at doing/serving with this perspective, it changes what might seem like a daunting task to a joyful assignment.
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
How can we put this “get to” attitude into practice? Maybe by remembering…it’s not about us. By serving others, we are serving Jesus.
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
Rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man. Ephesians 6:7
I get to serve in the nursery so this baby’s parents can be spiritually fed.
I get to go on mission and serve others through mission projects, building, sweating, and loving people in the hopes they see Jesus in me and the work we are doing.
I get to make a little extra for the church potluck so that those who can’t bring something can eat.
I get to help with VBS and pour God’s Word and His love into little hearts.
I get to put in practice time to learn songs to lead God’s people in worshipping Him.
I get to carry the burdens of my brothers and sisters in Christ and lift them up in prayer.
I get to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
I get to give back what God has given me, my time, my talents, my money and provision to serve the Kingdom of God.
I get to share my faith and maybe get to see a life changed by the power of the Gospel.
This “get to” phrase has been popping up all over the place. In my worship team small group, in studies I’m doing and more and I just can’t help but think that we need to adopt this into our every day vocabulary. And you know why we get to?
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:9-14
What do you get to do today for Jesus?
